  • Study conducted on 862 professionally active nurses found that when higher levels of peer support are perceived, front line staff suffer less from compassion fatigue, have higher job satisfaction, and have a lower risk of burnout.10 A further meta-analysis of 18 quantitative, 2 mixed-methods, and 4 qualitative studies illustrated that one third of variability in nurse burnout rates was dependent on whether they felt supported by their peers, underlining the critical role of peer support in coping with work stressors behind burnout.1 Yet another critical study showed that perceived support from peers and the employing organization decreased the moderate to high levels of burnout among a sample of 73 nurses.11
